Excursions
Exploring the surrounding regions of Rome is an integral part of adapting to and appreciating Italian culture. GSE offers a wide variety of excursions to several different regions in Italy. Semester and quarter programs typically include five to six weekend excursions, while summer programs include two to three. The following is a list of possible excursions.

Pompeii
During a colossal eruption of the Mt. Vesuvius volcano on August, 24, 79 AD, Pompeii and sister city Herculaneum were destroyed and buried under ash and rubble. Despite serving as a popular vacation destination for many first-century Romans, Pompeii disappeared for over 1,600 years until its ruins were accidentally rediscovered in 1748. The remnants of the ancient city have since supplied historians with details about daily life during the height of the Roman Empire, as well as attracted tourists from around the world.

Florence
Florence is the capital of Tuscany, located in northern central Italy. Sometimes referred to as “the Athens of the Middle Ages,” Florence was established by Julius Caesar in 59 BC as an outpost for veteran soldiers, later evolving as the birthplace of the Renaissance and home to a plethora of prominent thinkers, artists, and architects. Visitors today marvel at Florence’s magnificent structures such as the Duomo cathedral, Michelangelo's David, and the Ponte Vecchio, the only bridge to survive World War II.

Capri
Explore the charming village of Anacapri and the famed Blue Grotto of Capri, an island off the Sorrentine Peninsula in southwestern Italy. Capri’s enchanting coastline, deep blue waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, and panoramic, villa-lined promenades illustrate why the idyllic island has been a favorite vacation destination for thousands of years. |

Naples
Founded by the ancient Greeks as Neapolis, meaning “New City,” Naples boasts the second-largest metropolitan population in Italy and a historical city center designated an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Province of Naples is responsible for introducing Italy and the rest of the world to pizza, the mandolin, and Neapolitan ice cream. Must-see highlights include the Piazza del Plebiscito, the city’s main square, and Castel Nuovo, the symbol of Neapolitan architecture.
