Pompeii During a colossal eruption of the Mt. Vesuvius volcano on August, 24, 79 AD, Pompeii and sister city Herculaneum were destroyed and buried under ash and rubble. Despite serving as a popular vacation destination for many first-century Romans, Pompeii disappeared for over 1,600 years until its ruins were accidentally rediscovered in 1748. The remnants of the ancient city have since supplied historians with details about daily life during the height of the Roman Empire, as well as attracted tourists from around the world.

Florence Florence is the capital of Tuscany, located in northern central Italy. Sometimes referred to as “the Athens of the Middle Ages,” Florence was established by Julius Caesar in 59 BC as an outpost for veteran soldiers, later evolving as the birthplace of the Renaissance and home to a plethora of prominent thinkers, artists, and architects. Visitors today marvel at Florence’s magnificent structures such as the Duomo cathedral, Michelangelo's David, and the Ponte Vecchio, the only bridge to survive World War II.
