Summer Program - Summer 2011

Middlesex Summer School includes 70 courses with choices in 25 subjects. The length of a courses varies from one day to up to five weeks and some are available in the evening. There are options for professionals, university students and those seeking to enter university and individuals studying for personal development or fun. Levels range from introductory to undergraduate degree level.

To reflect diverse interests and to cater for people with different levels of background knowledge, many courses are of an introductory nature and require no prior study. For others some relevant experience or knowledge is required (and Middlesex students require the usual pre-requisites). More information is given under each course heading.

Most courses carry university academic credit. Others are shorter, special interest courses designed for individuals seeking to develop professional, personal or creative interests. These are not assessed and are recognised by the prefix "SUM."

Students will receive a certificate of attendance upon completion of the course. Classes are taught by Middlesex lecturers or outside practitioners.


Note:  Couses are listed below as 15, 30, and 45 credits.  Supplemental fees may apply depending on your desired course.  GSE has the ability to enroll students in an additional course upon request, for a supplemental fee.  Contact GSE for additional information.

Accounting

ACC2211 Managerial Finance and Accounting
This course will develop and enhance your understanding of the role of accounting in business organisations; it will improve your accounting skills and train you to use those skills in a range of different business situations.

Arts

CMW3009 Fantastic London
We will introduce you to some of the best fantasy books set in London and to the writing techniques the authors have used. We’ll be exploring London itself with four walks and four opportunities to taste the food of London.

RCT1002 World Religions in London
This field trip based course, consisting of visits to sacred art collections, participating in pilgrimages and religious festivals in London, will allow you to absorb yourself in the diversity of multi-faith London and the religious related activities organised by a spectrum of institutions.

CMW3014 Playwriting For London
With a variety of seminars, workshops and theatre visits; this module gives you the opportunity to study, create and analyse theatre plays. At the same time you will relate them to the stages and spaces used for the production of new plays in London.

SUM0008 Making Stained Glass Windows
Ever fancied impressing your friends by being able to cut glass? Learn all the basic techniques such as cutting, soldering and cementing to make your own stained glass window. Have fun with light and colour, copper foiling, mosaic and sandblasting.  Become an expert in five days.

SUM0102 Introduction to Laser Cutting
Laser cutting machines are becoming increasingly common in workshops. With this course you get a practical introduction to this technology. The course will involve learning to drawn in CAD packages.

SUM0043 Music Access
This course is intended to serve either as a refresher course in a range of musical areas or as a precursor to undergraduate study in music. Successful completion will guarantee entry to the first year of a BA (Hons) Music or Music and Arts Management degree programme at Middlesex University.

SUM0046 Music Management
This foundation-level course offers an introduction to the music industry and enables you to develop skills in its key sectors. Successful completion will guarantee entry to the first year of a BA (Hons) Music or Music and Arts Management degree programme at Middlesex University.

SUM0071 Popular Music
You will gain an understanding of song writing, harmonic understanding, performance and improvisation, free and pastiche composition and popular music history and genres. Successful completion will guarantee entry to the first year of a BA (Hons) popular Music degree programme at Middlesex University.

Business

Advanced Diploma in Personal and Professional Development
The aim of this programme is to develop personal, professional and business skills in order to provide a bridge between previous study and Masters level study for those who do not meet the formal entry requirements. It is also suitable if you wish to pursue professional study for Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development qualifications. The course comprises of two modules taught over two week long periods with coursework to complete between teaching weeks.

ECS1260 Economics for Business and Management
An introductory course for non economists that covers the basics of the discipline, highlighting how these impact on the decisions the business makes. The focus will be on economic issues both at micro and macro economic levels.

HRM2013 Human Resource Management
This course explores a variety of key concepts in organisational behaviour. By the end of the course you will be familiar with theories and policies relating to employee resourcing, employee reward, employee relations, and employee training and development.

HRM3120 Individual and Organisation Change
You will learn how to increase your knowledge base about your own self, skills and values as well as your reactions to change processes from an organisational perspective. This will provide you with the tools needed to market yourself in the workplace and general career life planning.

HRM3125 Leadership and Management
This course will provide you with grounding in the core competencies related to management and leadership.  Alongside this, you will develop your communication and team building skills through workshops.

MGT2525 Business Context and Strategic Environment
The module aims to provide an integrated view of internal and external business environment of organisations and to serve as an introduction to strategic analysis.

MGT2330 Managing Operations
This module aims to broaden and expand students knowledge of the concepts and techniques required for the design, operation and control of business processes.

MKT2210 Marketing Research
This module provides you with an understanding of the procedures that need to be followed in order to collect and analyse the data used for managerial decision making.

MKT3130 International Marketing
This module will allow the students to become familiar with the nature of a selection of international issues and gain an understanding of their implications on the firm’s marketing strategies and activities, and the wider environment.

MKT3150 Advertising and Sales Promotion
Learn how to develop an advertising campaign and related communication strategies to help prepare yourself for employment in an advertising agency or for responsibilities in the promotion or marketing department of an organisation.

STX1115 Quantitative Methods and Applications for BusinessThis module encourages students with little mathematical background or a fear of mathematics to develop confidence and ability in quantitative skills for business and management areas, which can be built upon in further study.

ECS2212 Macro Environment and Policy
Develop your analytical problem solving skills as you delve into a syllabus that elaborates on topical issues of the current macroeconomical agenda.  The module will help you to develop you understand and provide a thorough analysis of the sources and symptoms of the current global economic crisis.

SUM0099 e-Marketing and Social Media Strategy
A successful e-marketing and social media strategy is considered to be a critical success factor for companies and entrepreneurs working in any sector of the economy. This intensive masterclass will help you to understand the evolving landscape of e-marketing and social media and to acquire a toolkit for deciding and delivering your own strategies.

Computing

CCM1418 Introduction to Computing Systems, Architectures and Networks
You will gain an understanding of how currently available computer and network hardware enables modern computers to function as networked, multi-media machines and will develop a range of transferable skills

SUM0050 Introduction to Web Design
This stimulating and intensive course will teach you how to create web pages and build a web site using HTML. For those of you who are a little more ambitious, there is also a gentle introduction to JavaScript.

BIS2217 Digital Investigation
The module aims to give students a sound understanding of the relationship between digital investigations and digital technologies. This practical module will equip students with the skills to analyse electronic digital media using industry tools and conduct forensic investigations using commercial software on provided case studies.

SUM0095 Physical Computing with the Arduino
Arduino is an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software. It's intended for artists, designers, hobbyists, and anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments. No previous knowledge of the system is required and this course will enable you to develop your own interactive products and environments.

Economics

ECS1260 Economics for Business and Management

SUM0040 Classroom Presence - A Course for Teachers
This course is for anyone who wants to improve their confidence and presence in the primary or secondary classroom.  Two widely experienced professional actors and teachers will take you through a variety of exercises and techniques empowering you with the ability to control and manage your classroom and ensure that your teaching is as exciting and engaging as it can possibly be!

SUM0101 Managing School Conflict: Understanding Aspects of Behaviour
The aim of the course is to help you develop your knowledge and understanding of conflict resolution
theory and practice.  You will develop an understanding of a range of conflict resolution practices that can be used in a school.

Film Studies

MDA1910 Film Forms and Contexts - Studies in World Cinema
You will explore some of the most influential film making during the last forty years, addressing popular cinema as well as indigenous films and art house cinema from countries such as Africa and Iran. We shall be examining how films function both as entertainment and as cultural and social commentary.

TVP2000 Digital Film Making
This engaging and highly practical course will provide you with a detailed consideration of single camera production genres, viewing environments, technologies, operating skills, roles and practices. A number of film making workshops will take place covering camera, lighting, sound and editing.

FRE1757 European Cinema
This course, taught in English, provides the opportunity to gain an insight into recent and contemporary western European cinema. It will involve a thematic and stylistic analysis of a variety of French, German, Italian and Spanish films and their influence on more contemporary European cinema.

Human Resource Management

FRE1700 French 1
Suitable for students who have little or no knowledge of French, and who want to write, read, speak and understand simple, basic French.  A variety of topics will be covered.

FRE1720 French Intermediate Refresher
A refresher course for intermediate level students who want to revive their knowledge of reading, spoken, and written French.

SUM0097 IELTS Preparation Course
The aim of this exciting course is to prepare you to take the IELTS test and increase your knowledge and understanding of British culture. The course covers reading, writing, speaking and listening. It is mainly suitable for students taking the academic module, but it is also useful for the general module as well.

Law

LAW2114/LAW2050 Consumers and the Law
You will examine the general principles underlying the legal protection given to consumers under both civil and criminal law and the ways in which those principles are applied.

LAW2120 Law for Business
This module will examine the laws regulating the conduct of business and business organisations. The first part of the module sets the context and provides essential material on English Business Law (English Legal System, Contract, Tort and Employment) whilst the second part covers Company Law and Corporate Governance.

Marketing

MKT2210 Marketing Research
This module provides you with an understanding of the procedures that need to be followed in order to collect and analyse the data used for managerial decision making.

POI2351 Theory of International Politics
This topical course will allow you to examine the main theories of international politics and their application to interstate relations. Realist, Liberal, Marxist and Social Constructivist approaches are analyzed and applied to the study of diplomacy, sovereignty, foreign policy and war.

POI3601 Politics of the European Union
You will be introduced to the political institutions and policies of the EU. The history and theory of European integration is explored along with analysis of the decision making process and key policies.

Psychology

PSY0010 Introductory Psychology
This engaging course provides an access route into the BSc Psychology degree at Middlesex University. You will be introduced to contemporary theory and research and cover topics such as social psychology, cognition and individual differences.

PSY1014 Foundation Research Methods in Psychology
This module introduces students to quantitative & qualitative techniques employed in psychological research.  It may be particularly useful for students who are considering taking the Middlesex University Graduate Diploma in Psychology.

PSY2015 Interpersonal Skills, Understanding and Influence
This course covers the theory and practice of interpersonal skills and covers topics such as listening skills, influencing skills, conflict resolution, working in teams and detecting deception.

PSY2220 Know Your Own Personality and Emotional Intelligence

DEV3005 Contemporary Issues in the Third World
This course considers some of the key environmental and developmental issues facing the contemporary “Third World,” exploring the historical origins of the problems faced as well as the solutions presented by a range of development actors.

Sports Science

SES1220 An Introduction to Sports Massage
This course provides you with an understanding of the role of sports massage in athletic health care.  You will have the opportunity to practice sports massage techniques and acquire specific and unique understandings of human anatomical function.

SES1215 Applied Anatomy
You will be introduced to the concepts of muscular-skeletal anatomy and its application to human movement. The relationship within sport performance, structure and function is also explored.  

SES3001 Strength and Conditioning
Explore the practical application of training theories – topics include resistance training and Olympic lifting, plyometrics, speed and agility training, fitness testing and designing strength and conditioning programmes. Ideal for fitness trainers or those already studying in the field.

CMW4101 Creative Writing - Voice
In this postgraduate level course you will consider a range of texts through the prism of narrative voice.  You will consider the differing tones and styles and the effects this has on the reader.

ELS3321 Shakespeare and Sexuality
This module studies texts by Shakespeare and contemporary dramatists in the context of Renaissance England, and as manifestations of some important concerns of the culture of the time: masculinity and femininity and sexuality.

ELS3323 Gender and the Postmodern
Gender is a central way in which we think and imagine ourselves. This third level module examines how gender has been configured within twentieth-century literary texts, and the role of writing in producing gendered identities.

SUM0002 Introduction to Creative Writing
This course introduces you to the craft and process of creative writing.  The exercises carried out will stimulate skills in characterisation, dialogue, narrative, imagery.  By the end of the course you will have developed your own writing voice and produced a selection of prose, fiction and poetry.
