GSE offers a summer Language and Culture program at the University of Florence. Although no language requirement exists, it is recommended that students have taken at least one semester of Italian.
Required Language Classes
Students may earn up to 5 semester credits for the completion of required language portion of the program. The program is 5 weeks long. Classes meet Monday through Friday in the mornings for a total of 60 contact hours. Students will take a placement exam on the first day of class and be enrolled in the appropriate level course thereafter. GSE students will then be enrolled in one of the four language course levels. The levels offered include Preparatory, Intermediate, Intermediate-Advanced, and Advanced. All levels are designed to develop grammar, conversation, and vocabulary skills. There will be a final exam for all levels at the conclusion of the course.
Optional Culture Classes
In addition to the language portion of the summer program, students are able to enroll in cultural courses for credit and non-credit. Courses such as Italian Literature, History of Art, and Renaissance Art and Culture are just a few of the several topics covered . GSE students may also attend numerous non-credit cultural courses offered at Centro di Cultura. Some non-credit cultural courses include Italian History, Italian Film, and History of Music.
