17th and 18th Century Literature

As part of a two-semester sequence, this course presents the principal literary movements of the 17th and 18th centuries in France and their relation to the political and social history of the time. While discussing the 17th century, students will analyze the works of writers like Corneille, Pascal, Racine and Molière as well as La Bruyère and Fénelon. Students will then study the classical period of the Enlightenment, including La Sage, Prévost, Voltaire, Diderot and Rousseau. The course will conclude with the Naturalism and pre-Romanticism periods.
