This course examines the shaping of France through a historical and social survey from 1715 to today. The molding of the French identity will focus on social, political, economic, educational, and cultural factors of French life. The historical survey will include Napoleon Bonaparte, the French Revolution, the Second Empire and the Third Republic as founded by Charles de Gaulle. A survey of art will also be examined from the 18th century to contemporary artists. Initiation of the language and techniques of French art history in addition to the study of painting, sculpture, and architecture in France will be examined. Emphasis will be on the history of Impressionism.
