This course focuses on French literature beginning with the classical period. Novels by La Sage, Marivaux, Prevost and Laclos are studied along with the theatrical drama displyed through pieces by Marivaux and Voltaire. The themes expressed by Diderot and Rousseau are also given particular attention. The course concludes by studying the roles of naturalism and pre-Romanticism in French literature.
