This module is concerned with the concept of and application of human rights from an international perspective. Whilst concentrating on the United Kingdom and the enactment of the Human Rights Act 1998, it will also draw upon other jurisdictions such as Europe and the USA to make international comparisons. It will analyse ideas and theories about human rights as well as examining the historical legal protection of human rights in the United Kingdom through both common law and statute. It will also consider the role and application of international Conventions.  The module will analyse a number of substantive rights such as: freedom of expression; privacy and family life; liberty and security of person; protection from torture and the right to a fair trial; protection of property; freedom of movement and forced migration.  Remedies for abuses of rights and the role of the courts in upholding such rights will also be addressed.
