Organized crime, which is synonymous with corruption, murder, extortion, terror and manipulation, is becoming increasingly complex and at the same time more difficult to prevent and detect. Ease of travel has made it easier for criminals to move around the world and link up with new sources and new markets. New population movements have facilitated the extension of criminal alliances and networks. Meanwhile, advances in technology and communication have made the planning and commission of international organized crime much easier. This module is designed to develop students' knowledge and understanding of the nature and the extent of Organized Crime and to provide a pragmatic analysis of its illicit activities. Particular attention will be paid to the Italian Mafia organization, but with reference also to Russian Mafiya, Yakuza, Triads, Yardies, etc. Furthermore, the problem of traffic in drugs, traffic in people and the distribution of child pornography on the Internet will be critically examined and the current mechanisms and future prospects for global regulation analyzed.
