French civilization lectures at University of Paris IV - La Sorbonne are designed to improve students' knowledge of French civilisation (history, geography, literature, history of political ideas, art history, etc.) and to develop their comprehension of spoken French. Specific lecture topics are announced at the beginning of each semester and GSE participants will receive a schedule of available lectures upon arrival in Paris. A schedule of lectures that were held during spring semester 2008 is available here: http://www.ccfs-sorbonne.fr/Planning-des-conferences-d-ete.html.
French civilization lectures cover a variety of topics and one grade is earned for all lectures attended. The three general topics for the Fall 2008 civilization lectures are literature, the arts, and history. These courses meet Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays for 1-2 hours per lecture.
This course will take place in a large lecture hall. Your grade will be determined by one final exam at the end of the term. This is the typical format of lecture courses in France. More specific topics will be defined at the beginning of the term upon your arrival in Paris.
