As an introduction to the history of photography, this course covers work from Europe and the United States from the late nineteenth century to present. Students will develop familiarity with the complex and contradictory genres of photographic images: between documentary and discourse; between mass culture and avant-garde art. Particular emphasis will be given to Italian photography.
