The course will consist of 12, two hour lectures on the history and development of art in Italy, from its origins in the medieval period all the way through the Renaissance and Mannerist periods. Each period’s examination will include studying the works of the artists which typified the period. Some of the artists whose works will be examined include: Arnolfo, Pisano, and Cimabue of the Early Gothic period, Ghiberti, Brunelleschi, Masaccio, Donatello, Angelico and Castagno of the late Gothic period, Pirro della Francesca, Leonardo, Mantegna and Giovanni Bellini during the early Renaissance, and finally Michelangelo, Raffaello, and Tiziano during the study of the transition from the Renaissance to Mannerism. The course will also study the influence of historical and political events and their effects on artistic production and development. In Class lectures will also be supplemented with 7 class sessions held on-site in museums and Churches in Florence including the Duomo, Santa Croce, San Lorenzo, Cappelle Medici, Uffizi, Palazzo Vecchio, Palatina, and Bargello. There will also be one trip to Pisa and Lucca and one to Ravenna.
