Management 110: Multicultural Studies
American Business School Paris
The objective of this course is to give every student an understanding of the complexity of the environment in which they find themselves at school, in their host country, and in internships in foreign countries. Students will learn how to analyze the cultural framework in which they find themselves. They will learn how to work in harmony with people from different cultural environments. This growth in understanding will help students develop a much more open-minded approach to cultural differences and a tolerance for ambiguity. This tolerance and open-mindedness will later serve them in their international careers where the ability to adapt and integrate quickly are greatly appreciated.
INSTRUCTIONAL METHODOLOGY :
The course will be a series of lectures, class presentations & class exercises. Research will also be required on different subjects. Will be covered in class :
- Background to intercultural studies ; ethnocentrism ; culture shock
- Concepts developed by Edward T. Hall – high context/low context culture ; monochronic/polychronic
- Concepts developed by Geert Hofstede : power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualistic/collectivist, masculine/feminine
- systems of education in different countries
- world religions – Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Protestantism
The Cultural Dimensions of International Business, Ferraro, Prentice-Hall, 5th Ed,
2006 ; recent press articles will also be used for class discussion.
The final grade will be made up of class presentations & tests (20%), written reports/projects (30%), a mid-term test (25%), and the final examination (25%).
